In this job market?! (read this)


Listen Reader,

"Detail-oriented team player with strong communication skills" is on every EA resume. And no one with that resume is getting paid the big bucks.

I review a lot of EA resumes.

About 90% of them say some version of the same thing:

  • "Detail-oriented professional"
  • "Strong organizational skills"
  • "Excellent communication"
  • "Team player"
  • "Ability to multitask"

These things might be true. They're also an ATS (applicant tracking system and AI's grandpa) dream.

And look, you probably ARE detail-oriented. (you gotta be)

You probably ARE a team player. (not so necessary but helps)

But so is literally everyone else applying for the job. (so they say)

When you use generic language like this, you sound like everyone else.

And when you sound like everyone else, you get paid like everyone else which is to say, not enough.

How would you know? Literally every search firm tells you to write exactly that. But guess what they don't tell you.

They write a whole summary. Like a mini sales letter to their client about how personable you are. How uber capable you are.

What you were able to do/change/increase/decrease [impressive thing here].

How well spoken you are. How flexible you are. (that last one means cheap and lacks boundaries but I digress)

They're willing to because the commission for getting you hired is INSANE!

But they don't share that with you. They don't want you landing jobs without them. So if you're on your own looking for jobs. With a resume full of womp, womp, womp. You're done for!

You blend into the sea of identical applications. You get the interview (because your experience is actually good), but you've already positioned yourself as just another EA.

So when salary negotiations come up, they offer you $70K because that's what "executive assistants" make. You're interchangeable with the other 50 candidates.

You're too busy doing the work to realize that how you talk about the work is just as important. You're moving from task to task, executing flawlessly, assuming that good work speaks for itself.

It doesn't. Not in a job market where hiring managers spend 6 seconds on your resume.

You're not "providing administrative support" you're "serving as strategic partner to CEO, managing C-suite calendars ($8M in annual time value), and acting as liaison between executive leadership and board of directors."
