They're not asking what you think they're asking


hey Reader,

You know that moment in an interview when they ask, "Tell me about a time you made a mistake"?

"Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti." Wait, sorry those are Em lyrics.

But it does feel like a 8 mile moment. Your mind goes blank. You scramble for an answer that makes you look perfect (because admitting a real mistake feels like career suicide, right?)

Here's what you may not realize: They're not actually asking about the mistake.

They're asking: "Do you take accountability? Can you problem-solve under pressure? Will you hide mistakes or fix them?"

See the difference?

When you answer the surface question, you miss what they're really digging for. You fumble. You get nervous. You give an answer that sounds rehearsed but doesn't land. Or worst, black out and go on a crazy tangent -- earth to Reader!

Here's another one that trips people up:

"Tell me about a time you disagreed with your executive's decision."

Most people hear this and panic. They either:

  • Pretend they've never disagreed (red flag: you're a yes-person)
  • Tell a story that makes their exec look incompetent (bigger red flag)
  • Get defensive about being "right" (biggest red flag)

But what the interviewer is really asking is: "Will you challenge me or my client appropriately? Or will you just say yes to everything? Do you have good judgment?"

They want to see that you can think strategically, push back *respectfully* when needed, but ultimately defer to their authority.

When you know what they're really asking, everything changes.
